Downsizing in The Villages: Where to Start

Moving to a smaller home, a condo or closer to family means deciding what happens to a lifetime of belongings. It’s a lot for anyone, and it’s easier when you take it one step at a time.

Here’s a simple order to follow, with the local help available at each step.

1. Decide what’s going with you

Start with the new space. Measure the rooms and decide which furniture fits. Everything else is a decision for later steps. If this part feels overwhelming, an organizer or senior move manager can walk through it with you. See our Move & Downsizing Help listings.

2. Set aside what’s staying in the family

Give children and grandchildren a deadline to claim what they want. Photos, papers and keepsakes should be removed before anyone starts pricing items for sale.

3. Sell what’s left

An estate sale company can price, advertise and run a sale inside the home, usually over two or three days. Valuable antiques or collections may do better at auction. Compare estate sale companies and auction houses in our directory.

4. Donate and clear out the rest

Local charities offer free donation pickup, and cleanout crews can clear whatever remains so the home is ready to sell.

5. Move

Book your mover as soon as you have a moving date. Florida movers must register with the state, so ask for the mover’s registration number.
