A move is often the last step after an estate sale or a downsizing. The furniture that’s staying in the family has to get to its new home, whether that’s across The Villages or across the country.
Before you book a mover, there’s one quick check worth making.
Florida movers must register with the state
Under Chapter 507 of the Florida Statutes, movers and moving brokers that operate within Florida must register with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Registered intrastate movers are issued a registration number that begins with IM. Moving brokers, who arrange moves but don’t do the moving themselves, receive a number beginning with MB.
Movers that cross state lines are also regulated by the federal government and carry a USDOT number.
How to check a mover
- Ask the mover for its Florida registration number. A registered mover should be able to give it to you right away.
- Confirm the registration with the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services at 1-800-HELP-FLA (435-7352) or through FDACS.gov.
- Ask for a written estimate and read it before moving day.
Two movers with nearly the same name
Around The Villages, two different companies use similar names: Village Mover, Inc. and Village Movers & Storage. They are not affiliated, so make sure you’re calling the one you mean.
